BRISTOL – Despite celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, far too many veterans still don’t know about the Veterans Strong Community Center, Inc., and all the services it provides.

“I’m constantly amazed at the number of veterans who come in for the first time who didn’t know we were here,” said Donna Dognin, executive director of the center – which sits in the Bristol City Hall building at 111 N. Main St.

Dognin compared the veterans center to the help desk at a library.

“You know what you need, but you don’t know where to find it,” she said.

The center serves veterans, active military members and their families in Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth, Thomaston and Wolcott with information and resources.

“Everything and anything,” Dognin said. “It really depends on what kind of issues the veteran is having.”

The Veterans Strong Community Center can help find a local food pantry, assist in getting a copy of discharge papers, aid in finding employment opportunities and provide a host of other services. It is also there for things as simple as providing a computer for a veteran who needs to work on a resume or search for job listings.

“Even if they just need to check their email,” Dognin said.

The center, a nonprofit, has been around in some form for about nine years. It formerly went by the Army Strong Community Center before, five years ago, being rebranded as the Veterans Strong Community Center.

In addition to many veterans not knowing about the center and all it provides, there are also many who are hesitant to ask for help, Dognin said.

“They’re a very unique population,” she said. “They’re very proud. They don’t always want to ask for help. But what I always tell people is that ‘it’s just a little hiccup in life.’ It’s OK to ask for help. It’s a judgment-free zone.”

The veterans center is by appointment only. These can be made by calling 860-584-6258.
