BRISTOL – Family Roots Produce Market, located at 370 Riverside Ave., offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as local products at affordable prices.
The market is owned by Larry Tibbetts and his brother Matthew and is managed by Larry’s wife, April Tibbetts. It opened last November in a 3,500 square foot former redemption center building.
April Tibbetts said her husband’s family has been wholesale distributors for 50 years, providing produce for grocery stores. She said her husband has met many local farmers as a distributor and he personally picks out the produce will be sold at Family Roots Produce Market.
“My first job when I was 16 was working produce at a grocery store, which is where I met my husband,” she said. “We always said that we wanted to open a grocery store some day and, fast forward, the pandemic gave us the push to make it happen. My husband had been begging me to do this for years and every year we would look at spaces.”
In addition to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, Tibbetts said Family Roots Produce Market sells other products from local companies.
“We partnered with a bunch of local companies," she said. "We have ground coffee from Cafe Real; jams, pickles and relishes from Twin Pines Farm in Thomaston; and all kinds of different spices from the Nutmeg Spice Company in Terryville. We also have honey from Hilltop Apiaries in Simsbury and maple syrup from some friends of ours in Vermont.”
Family Roots also stocks Goya products, Tibbetts said, as well as Polish canned foods and delicacies from GMI in Berlin; Italian pasta, sauces and canned goods from Sclafani Foods in Norwalk; and Sanremo Bakery & Pastry Shop in Berlin brings in fresh bread daily.
Tibbetts said her goal is that Family Roots Produce Market has “a little something for everyone” and lots of different things to eat that people can’t find everywhere.
“We want to be part of the Bristol community,” she said. “We want people to come in and talk to us and get to know us. We want people to enjoy coming here.”
Family Roots joins “a growing list of new projects and businesses on Riverside Avenue as the city continues to work on revitalizing this area,” said Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu.
Family Roots Produce Market is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday. For more information, call 860-845-8461 or visit familyrootsproducemarket.com/.
