BRISTOL – Officer Brian Jones was recognized with the Bristol Police Department’s Silver Star, Tuesday, for the recovery of a stolen pistol and apprehension of two felons.

“On (September 15, 2020), Officer Jones was conducting a motor vehicle enforcement detail in the area of Federal Street and North Street,” said Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould during the monthly Bristol Police Commission meeting. “During this time, Officer Jones observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on North Street and would later make a traffic stop for misuse of registration plates.”

As Officer Jones approached the vehicle, said Gould, he noted there were three occupants and smelled the odor of marijuana. After interviewing the occupants, one of the passengers handed him a pill bottle that contained marijuana. He removed all the passengers from the vehicle and conducted a search of it.

The search revealed another bag of marijuana, a dagger-style knife, said the chief, and a stolen .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun with a 10-round magazine. Two of the vehicle occupants were charged with a felony.

“Due to Officer Jones' initiative to conduct the motor vehicle stop, he recovered a stolen firearm and apprehended two felons,” said Gould. “Officer Jones is a credit to himself and the Bristol Police Department.”
