PLAINVILLE - Plainville High School and Linden Street School were locked down Wednesday after a citizen reported hearing gunshots coming from the area, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

According to a report released by Plainville Police Lt. Nicholas Mullins, the police department received the call around 12:25 p.m. The high school and nearby elementary school were placed into an immediate lockdown as teams of officers searched the grounds.

“As the search was underway, we received what was later determined to be erroneous information that a student inside Plainville High School may have been responsible for the gunshots,” wrote Mullins. “That student was quickly located and we were able to determine that they had no involvement in the incident.”

Police searched the exterior and interior of Plainville High School and according to Mullins’ report, nothing related to gunshots or anything suspicious was found.

“The origin of the suspected gunshots remains unknown,” wrote Mullins.

Plainville Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett sent out the following information to Plainville district families and staff:

“Earlier this afternoon the Plainville Police Department initiated our lock down procedures at Linden and Plainville High after neighbors in the area thought they heard what sounded like gunshots,” wrote Brummett. “After conducting a thorough search of the schools and the surrounding neighborhoods, Linden and Plainville High School were cleared and are now back to normal operations. I am very pleased to report that our staff and students followed our protocols appropriately and students were safe at all times. If any further information becomes available, I will send out a follow up communication. Once again, all schools are back to normal operations.”
