Former UConn star Drummond will partake in Osgood Shootout

NEW BRITAIN - There will be plenty of big names and star power descending upon the New Britain High School gym floor come Saturday morning.

It will all for the same event - the Osgood Shootout.

Now entering its 25th year, the Shootout provides scholarships to New Britain graduates while also providing some of the best summer basketball around. This tournament is to be no different.

The tournament will be split into the two divisions, the men’s open and the high school.

The Men’s Open Division is set to feature a host of familiar names such as former UConn standout and current NBA All-Star Andre Drummond of the Detroit Pistons. This will be Drummond’s first appearance at the Osgood Shootout since 2012 and enters the event having played in the NBA Africa game in Johannesburg, South Africa two weeks ago.

Other names participating with Drummond are former New York Knicks and Providence College star Ricky Ledo as well as former collegiate standouts Charoy Bentley (St. Joseph's University), Evan Kelly (Sacred Heart University), Kuran Iverson (URI), Jason Davis (Sacramento State University), Greg Langston and Tylon Smith (Southern Connecticut State University), Kyle Wright (Providence College), Jaron Belin (St. Peters), Terrance Favors and Dave Maturah (Becker College), Tavon Allen (Drexel University), Brent Jones and Lowell Ulmer (St. Francis University), Robert McKiver (University of Houston), Ryan Vilmont (Franklin Pierce), Doug Herring Jr. (Utica) and Kevin Briggs (ASA College).

Local players will also be on display for fans this weekend. Roosevelt Lee, Austin Andrews and Darius Watson, all former New Britain High School stars will partake in the event, playing on different teams.

Other teams will come from Springfield, Mass., New York, Boston, New Haven, Waterbury, Hartford, Bridgeport and other surrounding cities.

In the High School Division, 300 Soldiers - a team made up of all players from Weaver High School - will try to win their foruth championship in a row. Other schools participating in this division are Middletown, New Haven, Waterbury, West Haven, Hartford, New Britain and Windsor.

Both days on the tournament (Saturday and Sunday) will be free to the public.

This year’s scholarship award recipients are Veronique Woods (Springfield College), Gabe Yopp (Dean College), Isha Kasi (University of Bridgeport) and Tahjae Barrett (University of Hartford). All will be awarded $500. For the second year, the Albert A.Vieira scholarship will be awarded to Johnathan Cuttino (Tunxis Community College) and Calvin and Kevin Harris (Dean College). All three will receive $250.
