NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain Bees continue to bring back players from last season’s roster with the re-signing of leadoff man and catcher James Skelton.
Team officials announced the deal Thursday afternoon, making the 30-year-old the 10th player from the 2016 roster to make their way onto the 2017 one.
“Skelton had a career year last year and we’re excited to welcome him back for the 2017 season,” Bees manager Stan Cliburn said in a statement. “His consistency from the leadoff spot and behind the plate makes him a leader on this team. We’re excited to have him back in our lineup and working with our pitching staff.”
Skelton ended last season leading the Atlantic League in walks with 91 and on-base percentage at .399. He also set career highs in home runs (10), runs scored (67) and games played (113) - 106 of which came at the catcher position, making it the first time he was able to reach the century mark behind the plate.
Overall, Skelton finished the season with a .266 batting average, 40 RBI and was named to the Atlantic League’s end-of-season all-star team as well as the league’s Red, White and Blue All-Defensive Team.
