Area runners close season strong in CIAC State Open cross country meet

The CIAC cross country season ended Friday afternoon with the State Open meet, with all of Monday’s top finishers across all classes racing together in the second meet of the week for state cross country.

Winning the boys race was Gavin Sherry of Conard, clocking a time of 15:16. Callum Sherry of Conard was second at 15:22. Ridgefield was the winner in the team points standings with 82 points combined.

Newington’s Michael Bohlke finished fourth in the field, running a time of 15:29. He led all area runners.

The next area runner across was Jake Nafis of Southington, running a time of 17:09 for 52nd in the field. Francis Porrini was close behind Jake Nafis, running a 17:13 for 58th.

Drew Nafis finished in 80th for Southington, clocking in at 17:29. Terryville’s Nicholas Fusco was 98th, running a time of 17:42, and St. Paul’s Colin Reilly was 108th at 17:48.

In the girls race Rachel St. Germain of Somers won, running a time of 18:02. The first area runner in the girls race across was Katie Bohlke, who ran a time of 19:33 for 18th overall.

Southington’s Jacqueline Izzo was across two seconds later at 19:35, finishing 22nd. Teammate Jessica Lombardo was 38th for Southington, finishing at 20:06. As a team, the Southington girls finished 13th I the field with 345 combined points. The winner, New Milford, scored 94.

The rest of the Blue Knights crossed at 21:43 (Emma Talon, 116th), 22:33 (Ava Egan, 148th), 23:05 (Megan Bissoni, 158th), 24:31 (Claire Tardif, 173rd) and 24:37 (Isabelle Hoffman, 176th).

Terryville’s Kaitlin Deforest was 78th in the group at 21:02 and Berlin’s Natalia Kmita finished in 142nd, clocking a time of 22:23.
