NEWINGTON ­­-Hall boys tennis defeated Newington Tuesday night 6-1.

The loss for Newington drops it to 3-2. Hall improved to 5-0.

In singles, Newington had its lone win from Matt Utter 6-1 and 6-0 over Matt Glassuar. The Nor’easters did not win in doubles.

Nikhil Vishwanath won two sets, falling 6-2 and 6-0 to Josh Liebman, and Marc Pantano won one set in singles against Brandon Herucs, falling 6-1 and 6-0.

The doubles tandem of Shevin and Shivam Patel had the most success, but lost 6-2 and 6-1 to Zach Berkowitz and Herucs. The Nor’easters lost in a combined 24-2 score in other doubles matches.

BASEBALL 

New Britain 16, Bloomfield/Aerospace 0

NEW BRITAIN -- The Hurricanes won big at Beehive Field, scoring eight runs in the first inning to ease their way to the victory.

Jomar Rodriguez earned the win on the mound for New Britain.

The Hurricanes will face off against cross-town opponent Goodwin Tech on Wednesday at Beehive Field at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

Newington 5, Berlin 2

NEWINGTON – Newington girls tennis defeated Berlin Tuesday night, winning 5-2.

In singles, Anusha Sigh picked up a singles victory, winning 7-5, 6-2 over Katy Sparmer. Emilia Dugas also won in singles, winning two sets 6-0 and 5-1 after dropping the opening match 6-7.

Michelle Novikova shut out Christine Kolc in back-to-back 6-0 sets and Rachel Errickson also won in two sets, beating Abigail Leavinworth 6-0 and 6-2.

In doubles, Newington’s Diana Slowinski and Rebecca Fisher topped Maddy Palmese and Victoria Pietrucha 6-3 and 6-4. Meghana Gadde and Emily Gaudette won in doubles format as well, winning the opening set 6-3 and 10-6. The two lost the second match 4-6 to Emily and Susan Wisniewski 4-6.

Berlin won one doubles match from Emily Kulinski and Abby Cutler, defeating Emily Rogalski and Veronica Torres 4-6 and 3-6.

The loss for Berlin drops it to 4-2. Newington improves to 5-2.

SOFTBALL

Nonnewaug 13, Terryville 2

PLYMOUTH – Nonnewaug softball took down Terryville in a 13-2 final Tuesday night.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Terryville scored once to cut the difference to one before Nonnewaug opened it up in the third inning.

Nonnewaug added on four more runs in the fourth before Terryville answered back, making the score 9-2. The Chiefs scored once more in the fifth, twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, leading to the final.

Terryville committed seven errors while collecting 10 hits in the loss.

Leah Dionne pitched five innings, striking out one. Tiffany Pires pitched two innings, striking out three.

GIRLS GOLF

Newington 208, Lewis Mills 234, Suffield 273

NEWINGTON – Newington girls golf led the way Tuesday night at Indian Hill Country Club, shooting a 208 against Lewis Mills and Suffield.

Lewis Mills scored a 234 and Suffield scored 273.

The low medalist for back-to-back meets for Newington was Mdison Massaro-Cook, shooting a 49.

Berlin 187, Farmington 213

FARMINGTON -- The Redcoats won its third straight match with Kenna Roman leading the way.

Roman was the medalist of the round, shooting a 40, with Libby Dunn next at 42, Molly Szcesniak finishing with a 51 and Rachel Varley recording a 54 for Berlin.

Katarina Petrovic shot a 41 as Farmington’s best finisher.

BOYS GOLF

St. Paul 166, Holy Cross 197

BRISTOL - St. Paul boys golf defeated Holy Cross Tuesday night 166-197.

Sophomore Matt Downes drilled a hole-in-one on the third hole en route to a medaling round for St. Paul. He shot a 34 for the match low.

New Britain 5, Wilcox Tech 2

New Britain boys tennis defeated Wilcox Tech 5-2 Tuesday night, improving to 3-2 on the season.

Wilcox Tech dropped to 1-6.

Jacob Rulka won back-to-back sets 6-2 and Sebby Terasiuk won two clean sets of 6-0 in a “nice night” for both on the court, according to New Britain head coach Joe Vaverchak.

Grasso Tech 229, Goodwin Tech 232

STONINGTON -- Julien Stepien led the Gladiators in a close loss at Pequot Country Club.

Stephen shot a team-best 52, followed by Christian Molina (56), Isaiah Martel (57) and Jaylese Harris (67).

Nathan Sylvestri was the match’s medalist, shooting a 49 for Grasso Tech.

Goodwin Tech will host O’Brien Tech at Stanley Golf Course on Thursday at 2 p.m.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Lewis Mills 81, Bristol Central 68

BRISTOL - Bristol Central girls track and field scored 68 points against Lewis Mills’ 81 Tuesday night, ending the night with seven first-place finishers.

BC’s 4x800 meter relay team Natalia Popielarz, Salvatrice Bosco, Isabella Crandal and Sophia Sark took first, clocking a time of 10:52.

Taking first in individual events was Savatrice Bosco in the 200 meters at 27.9 and in the 400 meters at 1:00.90. Natalia Popielarz clocked a time of 2:37 and 6:04 in the 800 and 1,600 meters, respectively.

In the field, the Rams had Kaleah Richards place first in the shot put, throwing a distance of 22-2.75.

Berlin 114, Bristol Eastern 27

BRISTOL -- Berlin won its girls track and field meet over Bristol Eastern Tuesday night with a final score of 114-27.

Megan Perrotta was the winner of two events, winning the 1,600 and 3,200 meter events. Kristen Kozlowski also won two events for Berlin, winning in three field events – high jump, triple jump and long jump.

The four-girl relay team of Taylor Desmarais, Jaden Paldino, Jenna Wenzel and Perrotta clocked a season=best time of 10;17 in the 4x800 meters. The tandem of Christy Morley, Paldino, Wenzel and Perrotta clocked a 4:18 in the 4x400 meters, also a season-best.

Northwestern 130, Terryville 22; Housatonic 59, Terryville 54

TERRYVILLE -- Katie Deforest won the mile as the only point-getter for the Kangaroos.

Deforest finished in 5:29.3 to take first.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Bristol Central 90, Lewis Mills 60

LEWIS MILLS -- The Rams remained undefeated in its win over Lewis Mills.

Nate DeAngelo was part of three winning events, as the senior took first in the mile (4:25) and two-mile (10:02) and was on the winning 4x800 relay team with Francis Porrini, Chris Roy and Austin Freve in 8:45.

Porrini also won the 800 meters (2:05) and the high jump (5-feet, 6 inches) for Bristol Central.

Xavier Browne won the 100 meter in 11.7 seconds and was on the winning 4x100 relay team with Noah Conrod, Jason Monckton and T. Browne in 47.3 seconds.

The Rams will next face Middletown on Tuesday, May 4 at 3:45 p.m.

Northwestern 128, Terryville 20; Housatonic 50, Terryville 30

TERRYVILLE -- Nick Fusco won two events for the Kangaroos, claiming the mile and two-mile.

Fusco won the mile in 4:54.5 and the two-mile in 10:52.2.

Terryville will host Gilbert and Litchfield on Friday, May 7 at 4 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newington 3, Wolcott Tech 0

NEWINGTON - Newington boys volleyball won 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-9) over Wolcott Tuesday night.

Newington was led by Jacob Baclawski’s 11 kills. From the service line, he had seven aces.

Setter Eni Lici tallied 29 assists with four blocks. Sean Stegmaier had seven kills and seven aces apiece. Joshua Akosa had six kills and eight digs.

With the win, Newington improves to 7-1, and is winners of three of its last five. Wolcott Tech falls to 2-5.
