TERRYVILLE – One bad inning derailed the Terryville baseball team in its 15-8 loss to Housatonic Regional on Thursday.
The Kangaroos were up 8-1 after four innings, but things fell apart in the fifth as they surrendered 10 runs in the frame while going through four pitchers in the inning.
Starter Jake Rinkavage lasted four innings for Terryville before getting pulled after walking the first batter of the fifth inning. The next two relievers gave up all 10 runs, before senior Sean O’Donnell got the final out of the inning on the mound for the Kangaroos.
“He’s our number one [pitcher],” Terryville coach Patrick Norton said regarding Rinkavage. “We were trying to get away with holding off our number two (O’Donnell) as long as we could, until [Friday], but we had to throw him in to stay under the pitch limit so that he can get the ball [Friday].
In four innings, Rinkavage didn’t give up a hit, fanned eight Housatonic batters and surrendered five walks.
Terryville scored three runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to a bases-clearing double from Dylan Hogan, to go ahead 3-1.
An inside-the-park homerun from Rinkavage in the second inning added to the Kangaroo lead, while Ryan O’Donnell and Charlie Rogers recorded runs in the inning, to make it 7-1 Terryville.
“That’s a positive,” Norton said. “We’ve been struggling to hit early on. We’ve only had two hits in two games so to swing the bats the way that we did early on is good.
“But we just got to find a way to play seven innings and keep those hits going because we kind of hit a point where those hits stopped, but that’s a positive,” Norton said.
Rinkavage drove home another run in the fourth before Housatonic broke things open in the fifth.
Terryville tallied 11 hits, including three extra-base hits in the loss, while only allowing four from the visitors.
Walks were the real weak spot for the Kangaroos as they allowed 14 Housatonic batters to reach via walk throughout the game.
“We’ve kind of been the team so far where we’ve faced the hammers early on,” Norton said. “But we’ve taken a lot of positives from losses. The message today was basically we got to step up and take a little bit more ownership and not allow ourselves to get beat.”
Terryville lost its first two games by a combined score of 31-0.
“You can’t dwell on things and just to come in with an attitude where you take the field, give the best effort that you possibly can [so] that when you leave the field you can hang your head high and say ‘i gave the effort I can give,’” Norton said.
The Kangaroos will head to Shepaug Valley on Friday for their 3:45 p.m. game.
