PLAINVILLE - Two weeks can certainly make a big difference.
That’s been the case for the Plainville girls basketball team as of late.
Fourteen days after losing by 41 points to Bristol Eastern, the Blue Devils got some revenge and earned their fourth win a row in the process, beating the Lancers 44-39 on Thursday.
Jaida Vasquez played a big part in Plainville’s success. The senior captain tied her career-high of 30 points. The next closest scorer for the Blue Devils (6-2) was seven from Kori Jones.
Ciara Collins, meanwhile, was the only Bristol Eastern (6-2) player to finish in double-figures. She notched 19 points with Sage Scarritt second with six.
The game was close throughout the night with the second quarter ultimately proving to be the difference in the game. Plainville outscored the Lancers 15-10 in the period, the largest differential of any quarter of the night.
New Britain 46, Avon 39: The Hurricanes earned their third win of the season on the back of senior Maya Slisz who posted a game-high 26 points on 10 made field goals, including three three-pointers.
Slisz and junior Layla Mejia combined for 37 of New Britain's 46 points in the win as no other finished with more than three. The Hurricanes finished with 11 steals including two each from Slisz, Mejia, senior Kaylie Lee and sophomore Maya Kelly. Lee also grabbed five rebounds along with junior Neveah King.
New Britain is off until Monday when it travels for a road game against Farmington at 6:45 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bristol Central 55, Southington 31: The Rams cruised to a win Thursday night to remain undefeated through two-thirds of their games. After competing with Central much better in its first game, the Blue Knights struggled to score in this game and suffered their fifth loss of the season.
Junior Donovan Clingan led all scorers with 14 points, junior Carson Rivoira followed that with 13 and an active first quarter allowed Damion Glasper to finish with 10 points and the team's only three-pointer.
Southington found itself in a bad spot early as senior Aedan Derrick scored the team's only two points in the first quarter. The offense picked up somewhat, but Central is a difficult team to come back against.
The Rams will face Plainville on Monday in pursuit of their ninth win while the Blue Knights will host Bristol Eastern the same day.
Terryville 85, Housatonic Regional 43: Three games in three days was not a problem for the Kangaroos as they extend their winning streak to five games with their second 40-point win over the Mountaineers this season.
Sean O'Donnell was game's high scorer with 26 points, 20 of which came in the first half, while Dylan Matulis notched 22 points and Dominick Dao posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Terryville made 14 shots from behind the arc in this game with four each from O'Donnell and Dao and three each from Matulis and Ryan O'Donnell.
The Kangaroos will take on day off before a road matchup with Nonnewaug at 10:30 a.m.
