PLYMOUTH – Mayor David Merchant said that local police are close to capturing “Buddy the Beefalo” whose story, he says, has begun to spread beyond Plymouth.

“He’s become quite a folk hero,” said Mayor David Merchant on the escaped Beefalo. “I almost don’t want it to be over, it’s been such a good story.”

Merchant said that NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently spoke about the Beefalo on his weekly show. He added that there are now websites selling “Save the Beefalo” T-shirts and that Buddy has his own Twitter page.

“It’s really taken on a life of its own,” he said.

Merchant said that the local police department has been monitoring the Beefalo’s location. According to Merchant, he tends to stay in the woods and has not bothered people.

“They’ve been putting oats a little closer each time to a trailer which they’ll use to secure him,” said Merchant. “Once he gets in, probably in the next few weeks, we’ll have him secured. The police department has raised $8,000 - $6,000 of which will go to the owner for his investment and $2,000 of which will go to the game preserve he will be donated to in Florida. If he was captured the same day, he’d probably have gone to the beef facility. But, once word started going around, and because of the response from the community, they decided they wanted to save him.”
