PLYMOUTH - “This is an exciting day for Plymouth and the Ultimate Companies,” said Mayor David Merchant, as he formally announced the newest resident in the Plymouth Business Park Wednesday afternoon.
The Ultimate Companies is the parent company of Ultimate Wireforms Inc., which manufactures orthodontic wires, springs, and auxiliary products. Its manufacturing facility is currently located in the old Boys Club building, 200 Central St., Forestville. The company is planning to build a 30,000-square-foot facility, employing about 80 people, on six acres spread across Lots 2, 3, and 5 on Swicklas Court.
The Ultimate Companies got its start in 1988 and spent three of its early years at 88 Harwinton Ave. before moving to Forestville. In addition to Ultimate Wireforms, it now has a subsidiary in Brazil - Ultimate do Brasil.
At 22,000 square feet, the Forestville location can no longer contain the operation, said Nancy Brault, president/CEO of the Ultimate Companies. “We’ve been in that building for 25 years. When we purchased it we moved from Terryville to Bristol with 27 employees and it was too big for us. Now we are coming here with 80 employees and we hope to grow.”
In addition to having room to grow, the new building will be one story, an improvement over the current two-story facility, she continued. “In any manufacturing facility it’s difficult with moving machinery around, and even with meetings when your offices are upstairs/downstairs. To have one floor will be a lot easier.”
“We’ve been working on this for eight or nine months now,” she said. “Mayor Merchant has been absolutely wonderful to work with. From the moment Alan [Bednaz, Ultimate Wireforms president] and I came to ask him what he had available he was always there for us. It has been really nice to be able to work with someone so positive about getting things through all the committees and moving a brand new facility here.”
“I have been working with Nancy and Alan on their new home for Ultimate Wire for the past few months, and I can only say that it is has been a great experience for me to spend time with two of the most professional people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. The Town of Plymouth is thrilled that they have chosen our community to call their new home,” Merchant said.
“We look forward to building our relationship with the Terryville community through employment and town support. We have long been a supporter and business partner of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, Bristol Hospital, and the United Way of West Central Connecticut. By staying in the area, we can continue these longstanding relationships, as well as form new ones,” Brault said.
“While we will miss our Central Street home that served us well in Bristol, we are thrilled to start our new home in Plymouth,” Bednaz said, a longtime Terryville resident. “As we have in our previous location, we look forward to building a relationship with the town and businesses in the area.”
Brault has been very involved with the Bristol community for many years, including with Bristol Hospital, the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, and the Forestville Village Association.
“It’s a bittersweet change,” she said. “I know so many wonderful people in Bristol. This is a business decision but I’m still involved in Bristol. Those relationships don’t go by the wayside just because you’re moving your business to the next town over.”
The Ultimate Companies is expected to break ground in December, unless winter weather pushes it to spring of 2018.
“Our goal would be to have the facility completely ready by summer of 2019,” Bednaz said. “We need to keep the facilities going at the same time while making a strategic transitional move from Bristol into the new facility. Our business won’t allow us to come to a stop.”
Bednaz and Brault wouldn’t comment on what they paid for the three lots. Merchant said the lots were recently reappraised for a total of $170,000.
