Individual arrested for suspected arson of two New Britain religious buildings

NEW BRITAIN – New Britain police took a suspect into custody Saturday and will charge the individual with the crime of arson as part of an investigation into two religious buildings that burned Friday night.

City officials said that the New Britain Fire Department responded to fires at Tephereth Israel Synagogue a 75 Winter Street at 8:05 p.m. and the second call was made 45 minutes later at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church at 5 Franklin Square.

No individuals were reported injured and the New Britain Fire Marshal is investigating. The name of the individual taken into custody had not yet been released as of press time.
