If you’re looking for a company to service your energy needs, look no further than Quinoco Energy Company, which has deep roots in Bristol dating all the way back to 1877.

The 140-year-old company offers a wide array of services, such as home heating, generator installation, air conditioning repair, tank inspections and more. But the selling point of the company is its history in Bristol and its founding as a family company.

The company traces its roots back to the late 1800’s, when George Quinion partnered with Leavitt Trucking, which was founded in 1877, to form the Leavitt & Quinion Trucking Company. A few years later, Quinion assumed control of the business. He added coal sales to the business and changed its name to The Quinion Coal & Trucking Company. The business operated from a storefront on North Main Street in Bristol.

After people started using oil and kerosene fired heating equipment in the 1920s, Quinion transitioned the business to the delivery of fuel oil and kerosene. Business flourished, and in 1963, Quinion arranged the construction of a new office and the bulk plant on Terryville Avenue in Bristol, which still serves as the company’s current headquarters.

In 1979, George Quinion passed away at the age of 90. He was still active in the business at the time. Control of the business passed to his employee and grandson Brett Quinion. He changed the name of the business to Quinoco, which is short for the Quinion Oil Company.

General Manager Jim Hickey said Quinoco is still operating in the family business model to this day.

“We really treat customers like family as well. Our goal is to service customers’ needs, and that’s something we strive for every time,” Hickey said.

Hickey said Quinoco also treats their employees like family, which is why many employees have worked for the company for more than 20 years.

“We put both our customers and employees first,” Hickey said. “If somebody needs something, the company is there for them in any way possible.”
