Athena Health Care Systems, which includes Countryside Manor and Sheriden Woods Health Care Center, is excited about a summer themed “Together Again.”

The campaign kicked off this week and is centered around bringing visitors, including family and friends, back into nursing homes by celebrating with several events over the next few months.

“Covid numbers are low and we have a high number of vaccinations among residents and employees,” said Timothy Brown, director of marketing and communications for Athena.

Both Sheriden Woods and Countryside Manor have multiple events planned this summer to celebrate the loosening of covid-19 restrictions that has allowed visitors back into nursing homes, without appointments or time limits.

“Family members are able to come and go once again,” Brown said.

On July 4, Sheridan Woods will be holding an “Under the Sea” picnic for residents of the facility and their loved ones. Following that, there will be various picnics for individual units of the facility and their friends and family. These will include food and entertainment. This summer will also include a number of ice cream socials for residents in Athena nursing homes.

Athena is also excited to be able to once again hold its annual softball tournament, which has been going on for 22 years. Last year’s tournament had to be canceled, though some money was still raised through other fundraising methods.

Brown said the nursing homes in the Athena Health Care Systems each raise funds to help pay for the softball tournament. The tournament, which is held at Panthorn Park in Southington, includes raffles, games and lunch and serves as a fundraiser itself. The funds raised go to an Athena employee who suffers cancer or another debilitating illness.

Over the years, the tournament has raised nearly $500,000, Brown said.

Sheriden Woods Health Care Center and Countryside Manor offer short-term rehabilitation, long-term, respite, hospice and dementia care. The dedicated staff provides individualized care with compassion, dignity and respect. The facilities include a warm and comfortable environment with cozy rooms, attractive common areas, a well-stocked library, and a beautiful outside courtyard with gazebo.
