BRISTOL - City and Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce officials welcomed Home Helpers to its new location at 225 N. Main St. Monday, with President and Chief Care Officer Bill Gardner noting that the move was encouraged by downtown development.
Gardner said Home Helpers has been in business for 22 years, providing “age in place” senior care, long-term care, recuperative care and care for new mothers. It’s a national organization, but each office is independently owned and operated.
Gardner came to Bristol in July 2018 after seeing the construction of the Bristol Hospital Medical Care Center.
“We read a lot of articles about the city’s leadership working to position for the future,” he said. “We like it here; it has been working out really well.”
Gardner explained that Home Helpers provides non-medical home care service and is built upon “four pillars”: personal care, a nutrition component, wellness checks and remote patient safety monitoring. He said those who make use of their services can customize what support is provided to fit their needs,
“The personal care can be hourly or live-in,” said Gardner. “For the nutrition component, we have an exclusive partnership with October Kitchen of Manchester. We help to support patients’ dietary needs and, in the case of patients with Alzheimer’s who can’t prepare their own food, we deliver meals every week.”
Gardner said that the wellness checks include calling to check in on patients, asking them if they are sleeping well or taking their medication. For the monitoring, it makes use of PlusOne remote monitoring technology provided by Health PlusOne Corporation.
“We have a GPS system for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients who sometimes wander off,” he said. “It also includes fall detection. The PlusOne system is worn like a Band-Aid and it is a new technology that keeps track of changes in heart rate and breathing, whether they are getting enough sleep, whether there is an imbalance in their bodily fluids.”
Gardner said that there is also a “Family Room” web portal, which family members and primary care providers can access that gives them access to a daily log about how their loved ones are being cared for.
“It gives them some additional visibility and helps them to plan,” said Gardner.
Cindy Bombard, president and CEO of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, said Home Helpers offers a “great service” to Bristol and beyond.
“It’s nice to have an agency that comes to people’s homes and makes life so much easier for them,” she said.
Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu said the agency does “important work,” that is especially needed in communities like Bristol that have an aging population.
“There can’t be enough hands on deck for this type of work,” she said. “It amazes me how so many people are living independently and facing problems like social isolation and medical issues they don’t even know about. Agencies like this will help to see that those people get the care they need.”
