PLAINVILLE - Tag’s Tackle Box was recently renovated, offering more space and new supplies.

Tag’s Tackle Box is  at 94 Whiting St. The store opened in July 2016 in a 1,300-square-foot space. In November, the owners started a renovation that included expanding into another area of the building by taking some walls down to make the store more spacious.

According to Tom and Anna Grabowski, the store owners, they added close to 1,000 square feet.

Tom Grabowski said the store offers new merchandise weekly, and has already purchased the new products that will come out this year.

The store also offers seasonal products to better serve the needs of their customers. Grabowski said that when the winter is over he will have more salt water fishing products on the shelves.

“We carry the top brands in fishing,” Grabowski said. “I carry the biggest selection of ice gear for an independent tackle shop in the state of Connecticut. My biggest business is ice. We sponsor an ice event every year for our customers, free of charge.”

Grabowski said that in 2019, speakers from the fishing equipment industry will start to visit the store to explain  products and offer special rates. The visits will start in April, with a representative from  Tsunami.

Grabowski added that he often tries to educate customers and creates events to add a sense of community to the business.

“We had a pig roast for two years in a row for the people and we did the fishing ice event,” he said. “We go out, we give people free bait, we feed them. Last year we had about 300 people come out to Silver Lake.”

Kyle Cyr, of Bristol, said his favorite thing about shopping at Tag’s Tackle Box is the personalized service.

“There’s good customer service here,” Cyr said. “I came in, started buying things and then we just headed off as friends. Tom got me into ice fishing. Pretty much if I need any tackle or anything I come here to get it.”

Rick Tardie said he visits Tag’s Tackle Box frequently during the ice fishing season.

“Nobody has a supply like this,” Tardie said. “I come all the way from Seymour. It’s great. They have a lot of room now, a lot more product. It’s the only place I can get the bait I want.”

Grabowski said that the merchandise at the store is only 40 percent of its inventory. The rest is in a warehouse.

“Anything in the fishing industry, I have access to it,” Grabowski said. “The biggest thing is people want to come here because they want the knowledge. You don’t need to have a million customers to be successful. You just need to have the right customers.”,

He added that the business carries the biggest selection of Tsunami brand products in Connecticut.

“This store is a way of me giving back to people that want to learn fishing,” Grabowski said. “I gave up a full-time job making lots of money to do this.”
