SOUTHINGTON - Donato DiVirgilio, president of the new Farmers Insurance office on the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, received a warm welcome from Southington Chamber of Commerce officials and fellow business owners recently.

DiVirgilio talked with guests in his office at 1460 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike while Varona Pizza kept the guests well fed with brick oven pizza made in a converted fire truck parked outside.

DiVirgilio, who has almost 30 years of experience in the insurance industry, has had offices in Woodbury, Waterbury and Wolcott, and came to his new building and began renovations Dec. 1 of last year.

“It’s a nice location and travel is very convenient,” he said. “People were very welcoming. In addition to Varona Pizza, Blimpie sent over sandwiches for our grand opening and the salon nearby has been sending over their customers.”

Farmers Insurance offers home, auto, commercial, life and pet insurance as well as umbrella coverage.

“We sell based on what is the right policy for our customers,” he said. “We value integrity and help customers review their portfolio to make sure that they don’t have any gaps.”

DiVirgilio said he employs two producers and a “social media guru” and he has three interns from Post University. He said that he plans to grow his current location and eventually set up satellite offices in nearby towns. He also said that he is interested in hiring a licensed property consultant and is contacting Southington High School to see if there are juniors or seniors looking to get credits, community service hours and job experience through an internship.

“We are eager to work with the community,” said DiVirgilio.”My granddaughter Lauren just encouraged me to buy 50 boxes of cookies from the Girl Scouts and in the next couple weeks we plan to donate to either the Girl Scouts or a local veterans’ organization.”

Liz Hyatt, executive director of the chamber, welcomed Farmers Insurance before a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“We’re so pleased that you are making an investment in our business community,” she said.

Farmers Insurance is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and evenings by appointment.
