BRISTOL - Julian Thayer went five strong innings and got plenty of run support as the St. Paul baseball team eased past St. Bernard 9-0 in the second round of the Class S tournament.
Thayer struck out seven and allowed just one hit. Scott Winters relieved him and also allowed one hit. Winters struck out four.
In the first inning Josh Cofrancesco and Nick Morrell led off with a pair of singles and then Thayer brought them in with a three-run homer over the left field fence.
Chris Mills (3-for-3, 2RBI), Cofrancesco (3-for-5, 2 runs), Ryan Greene (2-for-4, 2 runs), Sean Crean (2-for-4) and Thayer (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs) all had big days offensively for the Falcons.
St. Paul will host Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday. The time of that game is TBA.
St. Paul 17, Tolland 6: The Falcons won their first postseason game in program history. With the win St. Paul will host St. Joseph on Saturday at 3 p.m.
St. Paul 185, Naugatuck 216: Ryne Salius led the Falcons to their 16th team victory of the year. He was the medalist carding a 41.
Michael Dolce (44), Sam Mazzarelli (45) and Chris Millerick (55) added strong rounds as well for St. Paul.
The Falcons are 16-2 overall.
