Sports Roundup: St. Paul softball's Poirot dazzles on mound in win over Wolcott

WOLCOTT - St. Paul’s Abby Poirot had a no-hitter going with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before Wolcott got a base hit on Wednesday afternoon, but the Falcons still emerged with a 3-0 victory.

Katelynn Ouellette went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in the game for St. Paul (14-1), while Jess Persechino also doubled and Poirot recorded 12 strikeouts on the mound.

Wolcott fell to 12-4.

Maloney 6, Bristol Eastern 1: The Lancers outhit the Spartans 8-5 but committed four errors.

Erin Girard was charged with the loss and Bristol Eastern had no extra base hits in the tough loss moving its record to 9-4.


Bristol Eastern 4, Maloney 3: The Lancers got a big day out of their doubles teams, wining all three doubles matches at home.

Kasey Simpson and Kelly Simpson set the tone with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Tina Guo and Leah Mastroianni won at No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-4. Rounding out the doubles matches, Sophie Johnsky and Valerie Bouchard took a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

Alexis Waag, the No. 4 singles player, had the other win for Bristol Eastern on the day.

With the win the Lancers’ moved to 4-8 overall on the season.

St. Paul 5, Wolcott 2: The Falcons had another strong team performance and moved to 12-3 on the season.

Victoria Kilbourne (No. 1 singles), Katie Pauloz (No. 2 singles) and Ximena Varela-Marin (No. 3 singles) all won.

Orenda Huang and Caroline Badal picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles while Lizzie Etter and Grace Carabetta won at No. 2 doubles.

Bristol Central 7, Platt 0: The Rams had a strong showing all around. Abby Goralski (No. 1 singles), Abby Gorneault (No. 2 singles), Alex Goralski (No. 3 singles) and Mersadez Chaleman (No. 4 singles) all won.

At No. 1 doubles Taylor Soucy and Emilie Dube won 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles Michelle Helming and Melaney Dam won 6-4, 6-1 and Danielle Carey and Erica O’Connor won at No. 3 singles.


Bristol Central 189, Rocky Hill 198: Jacob Nelson led the way for the Rams with a round of 43 at Pequabuck Golf Course. Also for Bristol Central (6-1), Preston Akerley shot a 44, Adam Ward carded a 46 and Nick Osuch and Ryan DiNoia each scored a 56.

Lewis Mills 162, Terryville 207, Litchfield 240: Mike Hills shot a 41 to lead the Kangaroos on the day but it wasn’t enough as Terryville fell to 4-4 on the season.
