DERBY - The St. Paul girls basketball team suffered just its second defeat of the season on Tuesday night in a surprisingly one-sided contest, falling on the road to Derby, 53-33.

The Falcons (10-2) trailed 18-12 after the first quarter and 30-17 at halftime, never closing the gap.

Jade Udoh (13 points) was the only St. Paul shooter to hit double digits, with Emma Cretella adding eight points and Olivia Stump and Taylor Crawford netting four each. The Falcons hit just nine field goals in the game.

Seymour (9-4) was led by Sydnie Drezek (27 points) and Kolby Sirowich (9).

BOYS SWIMMING

Bristol co-op 93, Platt/Maloney 90: The local swimmers picked up a victory in the Malone Center pool in a meet that wasn’t decided until the second to last event.

“The team showed today that with a few people missing due to illness, that they can still pull together to get a win and turn in good times despite having a different look on the day,” Bristol coach Nick Daddabbo said.

Key swims in the meet, he reported, were Gabe Bartolome and Lewis Sinche going first and second in the 200 IM, Keagan Mullan out-touching his competition in the 50 freestyle, Mullan and Ben Stafford placing first and second in the 100 freestyle and Colton Litwinczyk winning the 100 butterfly and breaststroke.

“Our divers also helped out today by competing against the one Meriden diver,” he added. “We were able to score points there that helped us to progress.”

Bristol is now 4-3 overall and will next compete on Thursday at Crosby.

“The key for the next few weeks is to stay healthy,” Daddabbo said. “A few injuries and a few illnesses have been showing in practice and makes for some challenges, but we have to navigate through those and continue to do what we do best - and that is swim like Bristol swimming and dive like Bristol diving, and worry about what we need to work on to reach our goals and continue our three-meet win streak.”
