Sports Roundup: St. Paul girls basketball wins big game over Holy Cross

BRISTOL - It was a battle of the two top teams in the NVL as St. Paul hosted Holy Cross Friday night.

The Falcons outscored the Crusaders 31-20 in the first half and had a complete team performance in the big 54-36 win.

McKenzie Gauthier had 11 points off the bench for St. Paul and Emma Cretella knocked down 11 free throws for her 11 points.

Jade Udoh was the other Falcons player in double figures.

Janessa Gonzalez had a season-low nine points, but still managed to impact the game on the boards with 10 rebounds.

St. Paul moved to 10-1 on the season and will travel to Seymour on Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Holy Cross 55, St. Paul 49: Mike Palmieri and Tyler Arbuckle did their best offensively to keep the Falcons in the contest.

Arbuckle had a game-high 23 points and Palmieri chipped in 14 points.

The Crusaders got a complete team effort with seven players scoring at least five points in the game.

St. Paul moves to 5-5 on the season and will host Derby on Tuesday.

Shepaug 55, Terryville 38: The Kangaroos couldn’t slow down the Spartans duo of Kyle Lamay and Joe Brunelli.

The combo scored 41 of the 55 Shepaug points and Brunelli had 14 in the first quarter alone.

Terryville showed fight and brought the game within 10 points, cutting an 18-point deficit.

Mike Tiscia led the Kangaroos with 11 points.

Terryville moved to 4-5 on the year and had its three-game winning streak snapped in the loss.

The Kangaroos will travel to Northwestern on Tuesday.
