MANCHESTER - The Bristol Central (Class L) and Terryville (Class SS) boys cross country teams both finished in the top five overall in the state class championships at Wickham Park on Saturday.
In the Class L boys meet, Bristol Central finished in fifth place, while Bristol Eastern was 18th out of the 25 teams competing.
For the Rams, Mark Petrosky finished 13th overall with a time of 17:29 and Devin Flores was right behind him with a time of 17:31. Pacifico Flores was third for Bristol Central, finishing 25th overall with a time of 17:50.
“We said all season we wanted to be top 5 and build on that for next year,” Rams coach Tamara Stafford-Kirk said. “I’m proud of the boys. They raced hard and fought for position today.”
Ben Wadowski placed 68th as the top finisher for Bristol Eastern at 18:45. Mason Poirier finished in 98th place at 19:16. Nicholas Provenzano placed 115th as the third finisher for the Lancers, with a time of 19:40.
For the girls, Bristol Eastern finished 14th in Class L, while the Rams placed 18th.
Freshman runner Avery Bracci finished with a time of 21:52 that placed 33rd. Maggie Santacroce was second for Bristol Eastern, placing 70th at 23:01. Just over 30 seconds behind her was Kelsie St. Germain with a time of 23:38.
Bristol Central’s Paige Hinton paced the way for the Rams at 22:18, good enough for 50th place. Behind Hinton was freshman runner Isabella Crandall at 22:57. Another freshman runner, Marisa Heller, rounded out the Rams’ runners in the top 100, as she finished 94th with a time of 23:51.
In Class SS, the Terryville boys finished in fifth place, while St. Paul came in 14th.
Corey Picard and Chris Deforest both finished in the top 10 overall, with Picard timed at 16:58 and Deforest three seconds behind his teammate at 17:01.
Colby Brown was the third finisher for Terryville, finishing in 29th place overall with a time of 18:32.
For the Falcons, only two runners placed in the top 50.
Aidan Reilly and Tucker Raymond ran well for St. Paul. Reilly was 37th overall at 18:43 and Raymond finished at 19:03, which placed him 50th overall.
The next finisher for the Falcons was Jordan Rinaldi in 94th place with a time of 20:14.
On the girls side in Class S, both St. Paul and Terryville were down at the bottom, with St. Paul 13th and Terryville 16th out of the 16 schools.
Kailyn Bielecki (22:09), Katherine Mazzarelli (25:45) and Jessica Persechino (26:55) led the way as the top three finishers for the Falcons. Bielecki placed 15th overall.
For the Kangaroos, Jordan Conklin (25:44), Sarah Evanoski (27:17) and Devin Girch (28:46) were the top three finishers on the team.
St. Paul 3, Naugatuck 2: The Falcons’ two-goal first half ended up being big, as Naugatuck outscored St. Paul 2-1 in the second half in the NVL Tournament.
Kendall Davis and Addison Davis scored the two first half goals for the Falcons. Briana Senese and Kendall Davis had the assists.
St. Paul was outshout 14-10 and received a strong outing from keeper Nina Zwolinski, as she made 12 saves. The goals against Zwolinski came on a free kick and a penalty kick.
With the win, the Falcons move to 11-3-3 and will play Woodland or Seymour on Monday.
