SOUTHINGTON – The Southington Blue Knights went on the road in Week 3 to dethrone the Greenwich Cardinals 29-28 to take over as the No. 1 team in the state. Their crusade continues Friday night at home when they’ll play host to the Simsbury Trojans.

The Blue Knights found themselves down 21-0 by the end of the first quarter at Greenwich before they stormed back to steal a win from the former top-dog in Connecticut.

Junior quarterback CJ DiBenedetto threw for 300 yards, 201 of which were handled by junior wideout Evan Anderson. Anderson also got involved in the passing game with a 24-yard touchdown pass to John Flynn. Senior Lincoln Cardillo handled most of the rushing duties with 86 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

The Trojans took home their first win of the season last week when they hosted Norwalk. Simsbury took the decisive win 30-6 after finding themselves on the other side of the decisions in the two weeks prior.

Through the first two weeks of the season Simsbury had been outscored by an average of 42-6.5 against North Haven and Maloney.

Moving the ball on offense should be no issue for the Blue Knights in Week 4 as they’ve averaged 282 passing yards per game and Cardillo alone has been rushing for 128.7 yards per game through the first three weeks.

For as good as the offense has been thus far, Southington head coach gave credit to their defense too for the way they were able to stop the bleeding against Greenwich down the stretch.

Simsbury at No. 1 Southington

When: Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Where: Southington High School

Records: Simsbury 1-2, Southington 3-0

Last Meeting: Southington 49, Simsbury 14

The Breakdown

Simply put, this would be a massive upset if Simsbury finds a way to win this game. Southington is fresh off what will likely be their most impressive win of the season and did so on the road in come-from-behind fashion. The Blue Knights are back at home with their new shiny No. 1 ranking in the GameTimeCT Poll. Southington shouldn’t have much resistance in this Week 4 matchup against the Trojans.

Cameron Beall’s Prediction

Southington 49, Simsbury 6
