Southington football finishes second in Nutmeg Games lifting competition, other area schools place in top 20

NEW BRITAIN - Not only can the area football teams prove to be some of the most exciting to watch in the state, they proved to some of the strongest as well Saturday afternoon.

Five of the local school finished in the top 16, with three finishing in the top 10, of the 2018 Nutmeg State Games weight lifting competition held at New Britain High School. A total of 24 teams participated.

Southington placed the highest, placing right behind winner Newtown after finishing with 12,835 points.

The Blue Knights also had a number of individuals place high.

Kyle Kraft placed third overall in the 160 pound and under division. Dillon Kohl took second in the 161-180 pound class. Ryan Gavronski took first in the 181-200 pound division, while Owen Bouchard took second in the 201-220 pound weight class.

In the 160-pound division, Kraft placed third in the bench press and power clean with JT Martin taking second in the power clean.

Tanner LaRosa took fourth in the squat and Kohl placed second in power clean in the 161-pound weight class.

Sam Bouchard won the squat competition in the 181-pound division, while Gavronski placed first bench and power clean and third in squat.

Owen Bouchard placed first bench in the 201-pound weight class and second in power clean.

New Britain was not far behind, placing fourth overall with 12,390 points.

Individually, Johnny Velez took third overall in the 201-pound class with Jason Shumpert placing second in the over 220-pound division.

Kaiyon Gunn placed third in squat and Hubert Lanosdka took first in bench in the 161-pound weight class.

Velez also finished third in the bench in his weight class, while Shumpert took second in squat in his division.

Devon Bishop also placed in the 220-pound weight class, coming away with second place in the bench press.

Plainville ended its afternoon in 10th place after finishing with a score of 10,845 points.

Bristol Eastern was next, coming away with 9.750 points for 15th place.

Jaden Laprise took the power clean portion of the 160-pound division, beating out Martin and Kraft.

Newington finished in 16th place with 9,010 points.
