WATERFORD - It was quite the season for the Southington boys basketball team.
The Blue Knights just couldn’t get past second-seeded Waterford Saturday night and their run in the Division III state tournament ended with an 80-70 loss.
Southington managed to pull with four points, 71-67, on a Colin Burdette layup and subsequent free throw with 1:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the team would get as foul trouble took out two of the Blue Knights’ best offensive players.
Jeremy Mercier was already out of the game with five fouls and Andrew Lohneiss followed with 1:27 left to play.
Lohneiss finished the night with 14 points, while Mercier scored 10. Burdette led the team with 19 points.
Mikey Buscetto scored a game-high 28 points for the Lancers.
Southington closes out it season at 17-8 with Waterford (23-2) advancing to face No. 3 Prince Tech in the semifinals on Tuesday.
