BERLIN - If anything, Monday night’s 49-44 win over Berlin served as a reminder for the Southington girls basketball team.
While the Blue Knights held big leads in both the first and second halves against the Redcoats, each time Southington would make a push that looked like it would start to put the game out of hand, Berlin would answer with some big baskets and bring the game closer.
The back-and-forth contest and letting big leads slip away showed that outside of Janette Wadolowski, the Blue Knights are still an inexperienced group.
“Sometimes I gotta remember that we’re really young too,” Southington head coach Mike Forgione said. “I start two freshmen and two sophomores and we gotta realize that we’re also learning as we go along.”
While the struggles were there at times, the Blue Knights still managed to figure out a way to pull out the victory.
Out of the half, the Southington had given up a 15-4 lead and let the Redcoats bring the game to within five points.
“We talked at halftime and it was a little bit of a gut check time,” Forgione said. “We gotta get more physical and we gotta match their toughness and their aggressiveness.”
The Blue Knights did so with a strong second half and kept their lead throughout other than giving up the lead once.
“In the beginning, we had the energy but we just couldn’t finish, and execute the way we wanted to.” Wadolowski said. “I think we got more aggressive coming into the second half and we crashed the boards more than we did in the first, which really helped us.”
While young and talented, staying composed for the entire 32 minutes of play is still something Southington is working on as a group.
“I think we would get a little bit of a lead and then get too confident,” Wadolowski said. “We need to keep pressing no matter what. Even if we have a lead, we can’t let up and I think that’s what we need to get into our heads because they can always catch up.”
The team’s current five-game winning streak and having won eight of its last nine games serves as a reminder the Blue Knights have the potential to make a deep postseason run, and with Wadolowski leading the way as the senior and the young players developing, each game it’s not farfetched.
Wadolowski played the key role again in the win.
“Janette did what Janette does,” Forgione said. “She controlled the floor, rebounded and kept everything under control which was huge for us tonight as our senior leader.”
