Southington High School will play host to the Wayton Open Tennis Tournament from July 7-16. This is the 10th anniversary of the event which started with 20 people for one day, in one division. Now the tournament is up to 12 divisions including men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles as well as high school boys and girls singles and doubles. Other sites include Memorial Park, Panthorn Park and Recreation Park.
Registration is now open at www.waytonopen.com and will close on July 3. If you would like to play there are some tournament rules and scheduling concerns to take into account.
First and foremost, you must be available to play on weekends and some weekday nights if you advance. No matches will go later than July 16, which is Championship Sunday. All championship matches will be played on July 16 unless there is inclement weather, in which case the matches will be played the night of July 17.
All matches must play out the full deciding set as there are no super tiebreakers. All quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches must be played at Southington High School.
Matches will not be postponed due to high temperatures so be prepared to play in the heat. If you enter multiple divisions, be prepared to play multiple matches in the same day. No two matches in the same division will happen in a single day. On the same note though, if you make multiple finals you will be required to play all of them on Championship Sunday.
It is advised that you arrive to your matches 15 minutes before start time. If you show up late it will result in a default. Patience will be key though, as tennis matches have a tendency to go long so there is no guarantee that the match will start on time because of limited court space, regardless of the schedule.
Men’s singles championship matches will be best of five sets. There are no line judges so players will be calling their own lines so honesty is expected. If there is a dispute, please respect the call. The score should also be announced before every serve.
If you refer three people to play in the 2017 Wayton Open you will receive a free entry to a division of your choice, just have the person you are referring write your name in the appropriate space when they register.
The earlier you sign up the better as it helps the people in charge with ordering tournament materials. All proceeds will benefit Thank Dog Rescue.
The Wayton Open is currently looking for sponsors too. If you are a person/business interested go to the website.
