New Britain, Southington football teams compete in Nutmeg weightlifting competition

NEW BRITAIN - The fourth annual ShopRite Nutmeg Football Weightlifting Competition concluded Saturday afternoon with a number of local teams and players placing well.

Overall, the event drew 25 of the top high school football teams from across the state. The competition was open to all players in ninth, 10th and 11th grade with the participants competing in three events - squat, bench press and power clean - across five weight classes.

New Britain finished second in the team category having lifted a combined weight of 12,705 pounds, just behind South Windsor’s 12,850 pounds.

Southington also finished in the top 10 thanks to lifting 12,080 pounds, which was good enough for a fifth place finish. Plainville was the other local team to compete and came in 18th with 10,110 combined pounds.

Individually, New Britain was just a successful as it was in the team portion of the event. Jayshawn Alexandre was one of the 160 pound and under winners with a 900 pound score. In the 181 to 200 pound bracket, the Hurricanes’ Muhamed Codjoe was in the top three as well with 975 pounds. Southington’s Ian Hall and New Britain’s Johnny Velez were among the top performers in the 201 to 220 pounds division as Hall finished the day with a score of 930 pounds and Velez with 920.
