SOUTHINGTON – As part of the Main Street Community Foundation’s Women and Girls Fund Wonder of Women event May 3, an event tradition raised over $5,100 to assist Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Pass the Purse allows donors at each WOW event table to place donations in a small bag for a specific cause. The initiative this year  will send all of its money to the Polish American Foundation of Connecticut, based in New Britain. Volunteers are in Poland connected with the foundation and assisting families that have fled Ukraine and settled in a new space due to the Russian-Ukraine War. The money will be put towards the families’ needs.

“Attendees opened their hearts and their wallets, and we are absolutely overwhelmed by the response to the Pass the Purse initiative,” said WOW event Co-Chair Carolyn Ziogas. “Our community shows us time and time again how generous they are, and we are so grateful.”

Created in 2001, the Women and Girl’s Fund is an endowment with the Main Street Community Foundation and through its WOW event, and many other community efforts, supports programming and grants for girls and women in the Wolcott, Southington, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth and Bristol areas.
