SOUTHINGTON – Two local students were recognized by the Knights of Columbus Friday for their participation in the “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest. They will go on to a state-wide competition later this year.
The “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest is held annually by the Knights of Columbus. Southington Catholic School has participated for the past few years.
This Friday, a representative from the local Isabella Council #15, Mark Proffitt, came to Southington Catholic School to present awards to second-grader Mia Giammarco and fifth-grader Gabriel Jados. He also thanked all K to 8 students who participated for their submissions.
Jim Messina, principal at Southington Catholic School, said that 30 students participated in the contest locally. They created their posters over Christmas break.
“The contest is about encouraging students to follow Jesus’ example and to focus on family,” said Messina. “A lot of the artwork we received features Jesus with Mary and Joseph. The contest is a way to encourage them to think less about the commercial aspect of Christmas that you typically see with Santa and all that. While those things are nice and wholesome, we don’t want to take away from the true meaning of Christmas, which is Jesus coming into the world.”
The Knights of Columbus website, kofc.org, says that the contest “encourages a shift from a preoccupation with materialism to the light of Christ and the spirit of giving.”
Messina said that, in the next couple of weeks, Mia and Gabriel’s posters will be entered into the state contest. If they win that, they may go on to be entered into a national contest.
“It’s the winners from each district,” explained Messina. “Southington is part of a district with Cheshire.”
Messina added that Southington Catholic School is currently recruiting for students as part of Catholic Schools Week. Southington Catholic School is located at 133 Bristol St., Southington.
