SOUTHINGTON – Following their popularity at the local farmer’s market, Nonnie’s Pies & Creations has decided to open up a new bake shop in town, offering a variety of pies, cookies and other treats.

The Southington Chamber of Commerce welcomed Nonnie’s Pies & Creations, owned by Nella Lastrina, to town Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new location at 190 Main St., next to Hen House BBQ.

Lastrina said she had been coming to the farmer’s market since last year. She then had a booth at the Apple Harvest Festival, which helped to bring her customers from all over the state. Yet, her love of baking goes back long before that, having been making her popular pies for more than 20 years.

Lastrina began by offering pistachio cream pies. After they became a big hit, she has since expanded to offering other flavors such as cookies & cream, apple cake, key lime, banana cream, strawberry cream and more. They also offer cookies, cupcakes and other pastries and plan to have seasonal offerings including pecan cream pies and eggnog pies.

According to Lastrina, the reason that people enjoy her pies so much are because they are “made with love.”

“Also, I only use quality products,” she said. “I keep to a high standard.”

The name “Nonnie’s Pies” comes from the name that Lastrina’s granddaughter calls her, “Nonnie Pie,” and her three daughters all help her with her business.

So far, Lastrina said that she has received a warm welcome from Southington.

“The Chamber and everyone in this town has showed us overwhelming support,” she said. “Our neighbors have come in to congratulate us on opening and other bakers have come in to greet us as well.”

Barbara Coleman-Hekeler, president of the Southington Chamber of Commerce, said that she is always glad to see a new business opening up in town and thus increasing Southington’s economic vitality.

“It’s exciting when a new business opens up, especially during this challenging time,” she said. “It’s great to see that people are willing to take the risk and join up. We’re all here to support one another.”

Charlie Cocuzza, chair of the Board of Directors for the Southington Chamber of Commerce, said that it was “terrific” to see Nonnie’s Pies & Creations open their doors.

“I hope that the Chamber of commerce can make people feel comfortable coming to support our local businesses so that they can continue to grow,” he said.

Cocuzza praised the efforts of Coleman-Hekeler, whom he said has done a “great job” not only in “stabilizing” the local Chamber but also helping to keep Chamber members up-to-date with new information from the local and federal government.
