CROMWELL – A New Britain man was transported to a hospital via LifeStar after the tractor-trailer he was driving was hit and rolled down an embankment on I-91 in Cromwell Tuesday afternoon, according to state police.

Diego Rivera, 36, of Greenwood St., was taken to St. Francis hospital by the helicopter following the accident for serious injuries, state police said. The current status of his injuries was not immediately clear. He was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s front airbags were deployed.

Rivera was travelling south on I-91 to the Exit 21 on-ramp, state police said. A Chevrolet Silverado traveling on the on-ramp crossed onto the travel portion of the roadway from the ramp and hit the passenger side of Rivera’s rig. The pickup was driven by an Assunto Cecere-Palazzo, 62, of Hemlock Drive, Southington.

Cecere-Palazzo’s car then spun and hit a guardrail on the right shoulder of the ramp, state police said. Rivera’s rig was then directed into the guard rail on the left shoulder, which it hit before travelling down an embankment and overturning on its driver side.

Cecere-Palazzo sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hartford Hospital by Hunter’s Ambulance, state police said. He was wearing a seat belt.

The crash is under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding it is asked to contact State Police Troop H at 860-534-1000.
