SOUTHINGTON - Plans are moving along to bring a Longhorn Steakhouse to West Street says property owner Joe Moruzzi, who aims to break ground next month.
Longhorn Steakhouse is a casual dining restaurant, which currently has Connecticut locations in Manchester, North Haven, Shelton, Enfield and Waterford.
Moruzzi said that representatives from Longhorn Steakhouse approached him a year ago and he has been working his way through the town’s permitting process since. He says that there are just a few more “i’s to dot and t’s to cross” before the development can get underway.
“I’m hoping we’ll be able to put shovels in the ground in about 30 days,” he said.
Town Economic Director Lou Perillo III said that Moruzzi had purchased the property, a pad site neat 200 Executive Boulevard, originally intending for it to be home to a restaurant and a financial institution. Longhorn Steakhouse expressed interest in developing the whole site, using the restaurant space for its building and the other space for adjacent parking.
“It wasn’t my first choice for the site, but I think that they will be a good tenant and that they will be successful and be there for a long time,” said Moruzzi. “This area of town needs some food. There are a lot of corporate offices in the area with nowhere nearby to go to. I think they will do really well. Who doesn’t like going out for a nice steak with the family? And that is what this is going to be, a nice family-oriented restaurant.”
Moruzzi said that Longhorn Steakhouse will be a “great and much needed asset” to the area that will fill a gap in the town’s bustling landscape of restaurants.
According to its website, the restaurant chain was founded in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia. By 1990, there were locations in the East, Midwest, Southwest and Puerto Rico. Longhorn Steakhouse was purchased by Darden Restaurants Inc., which also owns Olive Garden, in 2007.
In addition to steaks, the menu includes burgers, chicken tenders and wings, salmon, shrimp, soups, salads, desserts, and a variety of other sides and appetizers.
