SOUTHINGTON - The Southington Education Foundation is celebrating its 10th Anniversary along with their biggest fundraiser of the year March 30 at the Mountain Room of Mount Southington.
Jerry Belanger, a board member for the Southington Education Foundation, said that the gala is intended to be a celebration of 10 years of helping to install a lifelong love of learning in students.
“We will be trying to bring back some of our founding members to be honored that night, such as former Superintendent of Schools Joe Erardi,” said Belanger.
Belanger said that the Mountain Room can hold up to 200 guests. The Southington Education Foundation’s goal is to attract at least 150 people, which he said would help them meet their fundraising goals.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we’d love to fill the room,” he said. “It will be a great night out with great food and music by The Damn Hippies, who play a lot of ’60s and ’70s music. They were at our event last year as well. I hope that everyone will come out and enjoy themselves while helping out local kids.”
Proceeds from the gala will be distributed via grants to the district’s classrooms. In the past 10 years, the Southington Education Foundation has awarded nearly a quarter-million dollars to fund local initiatives and educational opportunities.
“We give out grants twice a year for all sorts of things,” said Belanger. “In the past, we’ve given our grants to culinary programs and funded a K to 5 family math night which more than 400 students attended.”
Belanger said that there will be a variety of raffle prizes and live and silent auction items.
“For raffles, we usually get themed baskets from each school with things like movie nights or gift cards to local businesses,” he said. “Auction items might include things like tickets to show or sports games or the chance to be ‘principal for the day’ at a local school.”
The Spring for Education Gala will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Mountain Room of Mount Southington at 396 Mt. Vernon Road, Plantsville. It will include a buffet dinner catered by Carmela Marie, live music by The Damn Hippies, a cash bar, silent and live auctions, raffles and dancing. Guests are encouraged to leave their suits at home and dress casual.
Tickets are $60 per person including a drink ticket or $50 for Southington Public Schools teachers and staff.
