Kari Peschel-Luise is Southington Teacher of the Year

SOUTHINGTON - Southington Public Schools have announced that Kari Peschel-Luise, an engineering, architecture and technology education teacher at Southington High School, has been chosen as the 2018-2019 teacher of the year.

Peschel-Luise was recognized at the 2019-2019 Staff Convocation in August and at a reception prior to a Board of Education meeting in September.

Peschel-Luise has been teaching in Southington for the past five years. She had an early career as an architect both in Canada and Germany prior to moving to the U.S. in 2008. She was hired originally by the Southington Public Schools in October 2011 as a part-time para-educator at Kennedy Middle School. She accepted a position as a full-time para-educator at Kennedy Middle School in Oct. 2012 and was appointed to her current position in Aug. 2013.

Peschel-Luise comes from a family of educators and believes that her family’s influence, along with her experiences from her personal and professional journey, led her to become an educator herself.

Peschel-Luise earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1987 and her master’s degree in environmental design in architecture in 1993 from the University of Calgary in Canada. She earned her engineering degree in Berlin, Germany.

Peschel-Luise returned to school to earn her certificate in teaching in May 2014. She has attended professional development sessions at Skills 21, EdAdvance, the New England Secondary Schools High School Redesign in Action Conference in 2015 and 2017, the League of Innovative Schools conference as well as numerous Project Lead the Way professional learning opportunities.

An an advocate and inspiration for teaching and learning, Peschel-Luise is a part of the Project Lead the Way program, co-chair of the Technology Advisory Committee, a mentor of Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) and previously mentored the girls’ VEX team with First Robotics Team 195. In addition, Peschel-Luise will co-chair the SHS accreditation committee, a process commencing next year with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Peschel-Luise lives in Plantsville with her husband, Christopher. They have three children, Leon Peschel, Erick Luise and Neils Peschel, all graduates of Southington High School.
