SOUTHINGTON - Police are investigating a car accident involving serious injuries after a vehicle left the roadway Wednesday evening and struck a tree.

Police on Thursday said the driver involved will not be identified until it is verified that his or her family has been notified. They declined to release any information about the operator, including age and gender.

According to police, the accident was reported at about 7:24 p.m. in the area of 344 Savage St., where a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro had been heading east before the driver lost control of the vehicle. The Camaro, according to police, crossed into the opposite lane of traffic, spun 180 degrees and left the road before its rear struck a tree on the Southington Country Club property.

The driver sustained injuries that were described by police as serious but not life-threatening. The victim was taken to Hartford Hospital in an ambulance. A passenger in the vehicle declined medical treatment, police said.

Police said it is unclear if the victim’s family has been notified of the accident. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash has been asked to call police at 860-378-1600, ext. 2384, or email cmichaud@southingtonpolice.org.
