SOUTHINGTON - The Southington Chamber of Commerce welcomed iLoveKickboxing.com to town last week, its owners promising to become strong community partners and promote healthy, safe exercise.
A ribbon cutting was held at 99 Executive Boulevard, one of 900 locations nationwide the rapidly expanding franchise operation hopes to open this year.
Taylor Crofton, executive director of the chamber, presented Margaret Lewis, co-owner of the Southington location with her husband, Bill, with a plaque before the ribbon cutting.
“We thank you for choosing our town,” Crofton said.
“We are so excited to be here,” said Lewis. “We are here to build a healthier community and we want to provide people with the best workout they can get - better than anything they’ve tried before. We also want to become part of the community and to support local businesses, our local chamber and local charities which we feel are very important.”
Lewis then told how, two years ago, she suffered a stroke and was hospitalized for 23 days. She said that being a part of this business and having the support of the community were what gave her the strength and motivation to learn to walk, talk and eat again.
“I am living proof that we can all overcome our obstacles,” she said.
The Southington location’s instructors provided punching and kicking demonstrations for visitors while they showed people around the building.
Instructor Keith Eaton explained that while one instructor is teaching, others will provide one-on-one help to participants.
If people are struggling, they can show how to make the exercises easier. If participants are having too easy a time, they can show how to make the exercises harder. All instructors are trained in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Eaton said.
“You are always working your hardest and you keep getting better as you push yourself harder,” he said.
