SOUTHINGTON - A local man was charged Thursday with abuse and cruelty to persons after allegedly leaving a victim in his care for an extended time without food or proper hygiene, police said.

Michael Flaherty, 47, of Southington, was the power of attorney for the victim in July 2017 when her condition was discovered, police said.

The female victim was bedridden and found lying in bed in her own feces and urine and had been left alone without food for an extended period of time, police said.

A family member of the victim reported the incident to police in July, Lt. Stephen Elliott said.

Police said they were unable to provide the arrest warrant due to Monday’s holiday.

Flaherty is free after posting $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court Feb. 26.
