NEW BRITAIN –- State police are looking for three people and have arrested a 15-year-old New Britain boy after a chase starting at a burglary scene in Southington early Friday ended in a crash on Ella Grasso Boulevard.
A state trooper’s car was intentionally crashed into a stolen truck that had left the burglary scene, police said.
Southington police said the four in the truck, including the 15-year-old, had stolen a carton of cigarettes from a convenience store.
A witness saw three men coming out of the Buck Store near the Interstate 84 exit 31 onramp at around 1:50 a.m. and called police, Southington Sgt. Jeffery Dobratz said. The witness followed a Chevrolet Silverado onto I-84 east, Dobratz said.
Southington police determined that the Silverado had been reported stolen in Bristol and contacted state police.
Bristol police Lt. Richard Guerrera said the Silverado was reported stolen on Dec. 2. The owner said he left his keys in the vehicle for a few minutes in a condo complex parking on Redstone Hill Road. When he returned, his truck was gone.
The same stolen truck aws involved in a chase with state police earlier this week, State Police Sgt. Eric Haglund said.
The witness lost sight of the truck which got off I-84 at exit 41, state police said. But the vehicle and then got on the highway eastbound where it was spotted by a state trooper, state police said.
A trooper tried to pull the vehicle over but the suspects refused to stop, leading the trooper on a chase onto Route 9 south where the truck got off at exit 29. The truck hit a curb at the end of the ramp, blowing out a tire, then continued on Ella Grasso Boulevard in New Britain on the wrong side of the road, state police said.
At one point, the truck was intentionally rammed into a state police cruiser, state police said. The truck continued on the wrong side of the road at a low speed until the trooper initiated a collision to get it to stop, state police said.
Four males left the truck and started running. State police and officers from surrounding towns found the 15-year-old, who was taken into custody. The others fled and may have stolen a Honda Civic from a residence on Stratford Road. New Britain police are investigating the crash and the car theft from Stratford Road.
The 15-year-old is facing numerous charges.
