SOUTHINGTON -Thousands of discounted books, CDs, DVDs and Christmas cards are available now through Christmas at the Friends of the Library Bookstore at Southington Public Library.

The book store, located on the lower level of the library at 255 Main St., has collected thousands of donated items throughout the course of the year in preparation for this sale. Proceeds will be used to benefit programs at the library beyond what would have otherwise been possible in the budget.

“The Friends of the Library Bookstore has been in business for 25 years now and we give about $25,000 a year to the library to support their extracurricular programs,” said Virginia Siton, of the Friends of Southington Public Library.

Siton said that 49 volunteers work to sort through piles and piles of donated items, organize them and get them ready for the sale. The store sells 2017 best-sellers in “like-new” condition at $5, and a most other books at $1.

“We got in a ton of Christmas books recently,” said Siton.

“You can’t beat these prices,” said Judy Krafcik, another Friends of the Southington Public Library volunteer. “At a larger bookstore you’d be looking at paying something like $20 for a 2017 best-seller.”

In addition to books, the Friends of the Library Bookstore has Christmas cards in $1 or $2 boxes for people to pair with a gift of a book. They also have CDs and DVDs priced at five for $1 or 25 cents each.

“The Friends of the Southington Library Bookstore is the perfect place to start your holiday shopping,” said Southington Public Library Director Sue Smayda. “Whether you are looking for best-sellers, classic mysteries, children’s books or paperbacks, come to the Friends Bookstore before you head to the mall.”

In addition to supporting the library, the Friends of the Library also donated books to support the YMCA’s Forever in Blue Jeans program this year and Siton said that they also donated five or six boxes of children’s books to a health fair that was held at the Aqua Turf Club in February.

Those unable to make it to the book sale can still choose to support the Friends of Southington Public Library by going to smile.amazon.com and choosing Friends of Southington Public Library as your charity. Each time you purchase an item, Amazon will donate a small percent of the proceeds to the Friends at no additional cost.

The bookstore is open Monday and Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
