SOUTHINGTON - A Waterbury man on Monday pleaded guilty to a number of Southington car break-ins.

David Sanchez, 44, accepted a plea bargain in Bristol Superior Court that will include serving 29 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of third-degree burglary.

Sanchez had been charged in 15 Southington car break-ins. But, in exchange for the pleas, a number of larceny and criminal mischief charges, as well as an additional seven counts of third-degree burglary, were dropped.

Sanchez, court officials said, was sentenced to five years in prison in another courthouse in the state. His attorney, said Ronald Dearstyne, the prosecutor, tried very hard to convince state prosecutors to agree to run that sentence concurrent with the 29-month sentence in the Southington cases. Given the number of cars Sanchez broke into, Dearstyne said he felt the two sentences should run consecutively - which is what was ultimately imposed.

According to police, Southington experienced a number of nighttime car break-ins in late 2016. During the investigation, officers collected fingerprints and DNA samples from the crime scenes.

Police said the evidence sent to the state’s crime lab later determined Sanchez was the suspect responsible.

Court officials on Monday said some of the victims asked for restitution, as thousands of dollars worth of goods were reported missing during the break-ins. Restitution, Dearstyne said, was not part of the plea arrangement.

According to police, Sanchez’s previous criminal history includes convictions of various degrees of larceny, sale of illegal drugs, running from police, forgery, assault on emergency personnel, interfering with police and criminal trespassing.
