SOUTHINGTON - John Myers, executive director of the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA for the past 30 years, will be retiring at the end of 2018.
Myers moved to Southington 30 years ago. He had been associated for seven years with the Berlin-Kensington YMCA.
He said it feels as though the years have passed quickly.
“My wife and I are both in great health and we just decided that it was time to move on to the next chapter in our lives, whatever that journey is going to be,” he said. “We haven’t decided yet.”
Myers said the YMCA’s Board of Directors will decide how it wants to go about hiring his successor.
He had nothing but positive things to say about the “world-class staff” he says he has worked alongside over the years.
“They are passionate and compassionate and they do everything they can to help people reach their greatest potential,” he said. “They are an upbeat group and to come in every day to an abundance of laughter was always something that I will cherish. I’m going to miss the thousands of connections I’ve built with staff members and community leaders.”
Myers said that he feels one of the YMCA’s biggest accomplishments during his tenure is always being at the table when it comes to community issues and youth development programs. The YMCA has often partnered with STEPS, a group dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse in youth.
“We have always been there to talk to others, fill the needs of the community and to grow to meet their demands,” he said. “We have also benefited from being a part of a very generous community, which has given us millions of dollars in support of these efforts. I’m proud to have lived in a community where we could raise our two children, who are now in college. It takes a village and we were very blessed to have them grow up under so many watchful eyes.”
Myers said he is announcing his retirement more than a year in advance so that whoever fills his role will be able to “jump right in and go and have fun with it.”
He said he will be updating the YMCA’s policies and making sure everything else is in order before he leaves.
