SOUTHINGTON -The Kinsmen Brewing Co. has opened in the former Clark Brothers Bolt Co. building in Milldale, offering a variety of unique beer flavors and styles.
Kinsmen, at 409 Canal St., is owned by Mike Brennan and Master Brewer Bob Bartholomew. Nick Palermo is assistant brewer and Nick LeFort is the “brand foreman,” who helps with marketing. After transforming the factory floor into a space capable of seating 400 customers, they officially opened the brewery in April.
“The place is packed Thursday through Sunday,” said LeFort. “We just have a few odds and ends to tie up and as long as we keep filling cups, we keep building. We have a rotating stock of signature, hand-crafted IPAs - including our signature IPA, ‘21.3’ - dark ales and much more.”
LeFort said local bands and food trucks will come to Kinsmen on a rotating basis. Karaoke is held on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m.
“We looked through all of the local bands and food trucks and came up with a core list that our customers really like,” said LeFort. “We have Matt Sperzel, The Emptys - which play ‘70s rock - jazz bands, acoustic duos and a rockabilly band that does a lot of covers of Johnny Cash. As for food trucks, we have used Chompers of Canton since day one and The Firehouse Smoker of Avon has been a long-standing part of our rotation.”
LeFort thanked town officials for helping them to understand the application process and invited people to come down to enjoy the town’s newest brewery.
“We want to promote a family, neighborhood environment,” he said. “This is not a bar or your typical brewery. People can feel free to bring their kids and play games here and we will also be setting up rocking chairs for people to relax outside as well as a beer garden in the front of the building.” LeFort added that Kinsmen has seen a lot of bicycle riders stop in off the Linear Trail, which runs behind the building.
LeFort said that Kinsmen has a “massive amount” of room to grow, and intends to do so soon. “We plan to open up a restaurant to sell pizza, sandwiches, finger foods, etc., on one side of our space and an event center for baby showers and weddings, etc.,” he said. “These will both begin construction in the next few weeks.” Kinsmen also plans to eventually bring in a larger brewing system, which will allow distribution of Kinsmen’s brews to local businesses. LeFort said that he has received more than five requests from Connecticut and interest from Vermont and Massachusetts as well.
