SOUTHINGTON -Veteran local educator Audrey Zack, the chairperson of the Southington High School Social Studies Department prior to her retirement, died on Easter Sunday. She was 80 years old.

After her children were born, Zack attended what is now Central Connecticut State University, earning a degree in History and English. She later returned to Central and attended San Francisco State University, where she earned degrees in Oriental Studies and Administration.

She taught at Kennedy and DePaolo junior high schools through the 1970s before joining the faculty at Southington High School. She served as chairperson of the Social Studies department until her retirement in the late 1990s.

“Audrey was a true professional - warm, accessible, caring and enthusiastic. She always had a smile on her face and was fun to be around,” said Brian Stranieri, principal of Southington High School, who worked with Zack from his earliest years as a teacher in the Industrial Arts department. “She was a visionary who was way ahead of her time and led our Social Studies department to new heights. She made herself available to students, parents and staff at all times. I have fond memories of a teacher who led by example and did it with style and class.”

Outside of her teaching career, Zack was well known for her work as president of the Bradley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and its board of directors. Zack also ran Little Bits, a business she started in the late 1970s with her husband, Raymond, and her sister, Sharon Cooley, that manufactured dollhouse furniture and accessories.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Rd., Southington. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.
