PLYMOUTH – The Rotary Club of Terryville’s Edmund Ganem 5K Race/Walk will be held for the 25th year July 18 starting at Terryville High School.

The race was originally scheduled for the first week of May and was rescheduled due to the state’s coronavirus restrictions.

Gretchen DelCegno, marketing coordinator for the Rotary Club of Terryville, said it is “pretty amazing” to reach the 25 year milestone.

“There is a real sense of pride when you think about how we have held this race every year and that it always gets a good sized number of volunteers,” she said.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m. and starts and ends at the Terryville High School at 33 North Harwinton Ave. The 5K course, certified by the USA Track and Field & Road Running Technical Council, traverses scenic areas of Terryville, including Lake Winfield.

DelCegno said money raised from the race will support the community through the Rotary Club’s scholarships and Student of the Month awards, which recognize students at all grade levels.

“We have also donated to the Plymouth Community Food Pantry and recently, during the Australia wildfires, we supported Terryville High School’s ‘Kangaroos Helping Kangaroos’ fundraiser,” DelCegno said.

DelCegno said the race sees a lot of enthusiastic participation each year.

“You have people running just for their health and people that are trying to meet personal records and qualify for other races,” she said. “There is also a group called ‘Run 169 Towns’ which tries to participate in races in every city and town in Connecticut. This is one of the ways for them to ‘check off’ Plymouth every year.”

There will be some new protocols in place this year to ensure the health and safety of runners and volunteers.

“This year we are doing online registration,” DelCegno said. “We will also have heavy signage to encourage social distancing and wearing masks for spectators. Since this will be held in mid-July, there should be reduced restrictions on gatherings. We will spread out our runners and there will be hand sanitizer stations as well. The finish times will be posted online and awards will be mailed out to winners so there is no reason to wait around after the race. You can grab a water, go home and hit the shower.”

This year’s race will have electronic timing, music and water stations placed along the race route. People can register early to receive a free T-shirt. There is a $50 cash prize for the male and female top runners and awards for all first place finishers in each age group.

To pre-register online, visit raceentry.com/races/edmund-ganem-memorial-5k-runwalk/2020/register. Registration fees are reduced this year.

Fees for the 5K Run/Walk are $18 in advance and $20 on the day of the race. There is no charge for the Kids’ Fun Run.

This year, there are currently 25 sponsors, including local businesses and individuals, for the race. DelCegno said the club is now seeking sponsors. To become a sponsor, call Mary Talge at 860-314-8224, Gretchen DelCegno at 860-582-3121 or contact the Rotary Club of Terryville by mail at P.O. Box 422 Terryville, CT 06786.
