Plainville has big increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases; state's death toll goes over 4,000

For the second straight day, the rise in COVID-19 positive cases was in the 100’s, while state hospitalizations dropped well under 400, according to data released by state health officials Thursday.

Locally, the city or town with the biggest move upward in confirmed cases was Plainville, which added an additional 10 in that category Thursday. The town now has 156 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Plainville has three additional probable cases, which is the same as Wednesday’s report.

On the opposite end, New Britain had a large drop in confirmed COVID-19 cases Thursday, with 38 less than a day ago, for a total of 922. The number of probable cases did go up, but modestly, with an additional four. That total stands at 70.

Bristol added two positive confirmed cases to its total, moving to 545 overall. The city has had just five confirmed cases over the past two days. Bristol remained the same in probable cases, with 19.

Newington, which had an increase of 24 confirmed cases Tuesday, remained the exact same as Wednesday’s total, with 358. The number of probable cases went up by one for the town, to 22.

After having the highest confirmed cases increase among area cities and towns Wednesday, Southington had a decrease in that category Thursday, with one less. The town has 309 confirmed cases of coronavirus, plus another 15 probable, which remains the same.

Berlin’s confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases both remained the same, with 145 confirmed and seven probable.

Plymouth also remained the same for the third straight day, with 66 confirmed positive cases and four more probable.

There were just 148 COVID-19 positive cases in the state Thursday, which follows a Wednesday total that was 112. There were over 5,000 tests reported in the past day. State hospitalizations had a drop of 33 patients over the last 24 hours for a total that stands at 373.

There were an additional 18 deaths reported, which moved the state’s death toll over 4,000, to 4,007. There have been 964 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Hartford County, with 302 marked as probable.
