PLYMOUTH - For 70 years, Jayne Eugene Florist has been a fixture in Terryville, and now owner Mike Piskorski is inviting the community to help him celebrate this milestone Sept. 14 with an open house.

The open house will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the flower shop at 141 Main St. Piskorski invites people from Plymouth and surrounding towns to stop in, say hello, view his assortment of floral arrangements and enjoy cake and refreshments. All visitors will receive a fresh rose and there will also be a door prize.

“Terryville is a nice small town,” he said. “I really appreciate the support of the local residents and businesses that have patronized Jayne Eugene Florist over many years.”

Piskorski said it feels “great” to reach this major milestone.

“I’m excited that Jayne Eugene Florist has been in town for so many years and put a smile on so many people’s faces with our beautiful arrangements,” he said.

Jayne and Eugene Slesicki built and opened the florist shop in 1949 at its original location on 14 Beach Ave. They were the only florist shop in town and Piskorski said residents were impressed by their beautiful designs of floral arrangements for special occasions and their wedding flowers.

Then, in the late 1980s, Arlene Milo took over the flower shop until she sold it to Piskorski in 1998. After 61 years at 14 Beach Ave., Piskorski relocated the shop to its current location in 2010, where the shop and its window displays were more visible for passing traffic.

“It was one of my biggest ambitions to move to Main Street, to a bigger shop where our displays were more visible and to where we could have a year-round Christmas corner,” he said. “This new shop gives us more space to accommodate our wide selection of silk wreaths and floral arrangements, live plants and fresh flowers and our seasonal displays.”

Additionally, Jayne Eugene Florist has donated arrangements to local clubs, provided them as raffle items for local organizations, and donated them to local churches.

Piskorski said when he took over in 1998, he met Jayne Slesocki and she provided him with insight into how things were done in the past and people who came into his shop. He said Arlene Milo also told him about different types of arrangements and that she was “wonderful” to work with and “very helpful” during the transition to him taking over the business. For Piskorski, becoming the owner of Jayne Eugene Florist was a dream come true.

“I love my job. It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “It was always my dream since I was 19 to have my own flower shop, and people are very happy that we are still in business and still going strong.”

Piskorski said while people still favor more traditional arrangements for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day, he has observed a trend where people now prefer mixed arrangements with lots of different flowers of different colors.

One of the reasons that Piskorski feels he has been successful over the years is the good rapport he has established with his customers and the personal attention he gives them.

“When people come in, I go out of my way to get them what they are looking for and to get it done promptly,” he said. “Sometimes customers don’t always know what is appropriate for different occasions, so I offer them my advice as well.”

Piskorski encouraged those who have not visited Jayne Eugene Florist yet to stop by and see what he has to offer.

“When you need flowers, come and see my beautiful arrangements,” he said.
