PLYMOUTH - Retiring Plymouth Center School Principal Crystal Collins said she is proud of the community she has built during her 19-year tenure.
Collins was principal for four years at Main Street School before coming to Plymouth Center School. She also taught music for 4 years in the Bristol school system and for 11 years in the Plainville school system.
Collins’ official last day was Thursday and she will be succeeded by Sherri Turner, former superintendent of Litchfield schools, who will be taking over on July 1. Collins said that she met with Turner several times during the school day to help get a feel for how things were done day to day at Plymouth Center School.
Collins said her philosophy as an administrator has always been to help people to be smart enough and strong enough to be able to do as much as they can independently while at the same time having everyone in the school following the same “master plan.” She said her mantra was “every child, every day,” which meant that she wanted to be able to meet the needs of every student on an individual basis.
Collins was proud to create a group of student liaisons to different classrooms. This group would meet with her and volunteer to assist with problem solving for various things at the school.
“It helped me to keep in touch directly with the kids,” she said.
Collins said that she also took learning courses, read books and watched videos with volunteers and teachers in order to learn things that helped them to be more successful in their roles as educators.
After her retirement, Collins says that she hopes to be a kindergarten “volunteer nanny.” She also plans to volunteer to help out more at her church and to “get involved in work on behalf of the homeless.”
“I’m ready for what’s coming next in my life but I will certainly miss my time here,” she said.
