Tickets on sale for American Legion Post 20's 100th anniversary gala on July 27

PLYMOUTH – American Legion Post 20 is holding a formal gala to celebrate their 100th anniversary on July 27 at the Lyceum.

The gala will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at the event space at 181 Main St. It will be catered through Emily’s Catering, which will offer an “elegant buffet style dinner” and there will be an anniversary cake cutting.

“It will start with a social hour with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by our key speakers and then a dinner,” said Laura Williams, junior vice chair of the Legion. “Then the band will start playing and everybody will hit the dance floor.”

Entertainment will include the Sidekick Band, with lead singer David Quick. According to Williams, they play “classic oldies” style music.

The Legion will also conduct the Missing Man table ceremony, for those missing in action or prisoners of war, and the CT Department of the American Legion Color Guard will ceremoniously post the colors.

There will also be a silent auction with raffles and event tickets donated by local businesses and by donationmatch, a website that helps nonprofits get donations for their special events.

Williams encouraged people to attend the event and help the Legion celebrate this important milestone.

“We’ve managed to hold this event together every year despite everything we’ve done through this past year with our building being destroyed and then renovated,” she said. “The Legion does a lot of great things in the community. We provide veterans with a sense of camaraderie, we help connect them to services available to assist them and assist them in financial hardships. We also provide scholarships. This is going to be a great night and you’ll never see another celebration like it unless they perfect cryogenics.”

The Plymouth American Legion Post was hit by a pickup truck last November, which dealt significant damage to the 175-year-old building. The Legion was left without a place to meet and in order to repair the post they will need to meet modern handicapped accessibility standards. Renovations are expected to cost the post $35,000.

Ticket sales have been opened up to include all posts in Connecticut and all groups affiliated with the Legion such as Legionnaires, Riders, Sons and Auxiliary.

Tickets are $50 and include a complimentary open bar. Ticket sales close the first week of July.
